[19] See 17.686. 21 = 17.122, 22 = 17.591, 22-24 = Od. 24.315-17. It has been objected that κόνις αἰθαλόεσσα and τέφρη both imply ashes, while, as Achilles is outside his hut, he can only have had dust to throw upon his head. But as the hut is elsewhere regarded as a copy of the house, it will probably have had an altar to “Ζεὺς Ἑρκεῖος” in front; this would afford a supply of wood-ashes.
