[410] περιστήσαντο, so all MSS. But the aor. mid. is always transitive in H. (see 1.480, Od. 2.431, etc.). 18.533, Od. 9.54 (“στησάμενοι δ᾽ ἐμάχοντο μάχην”） are ambiguous, but no doubt are also trans., as Herod. also says “στήσασθαι πολέμους”. Hence Bekker conj. “περίστησάν τε”, followed by most edd.; so also in Od. 12.356, cf. 4.532. But possibly the word may have some old ritual significance now lost to us. “οὐλοχύτας,” 1.449.
