[481] It seems necessary to take αὐτοῦ, on account of its combination with “σάκεος”, in a different sense from αὐτῶι, the former meaning ‘the shield itself,’ i.e. the body as opposed to the surface, while the latter is used in the weak anaphoric sense ‘in it.’ That πτύχες =layers of hide is clear from 7.247 compared with 220.
