[64] πρόφερε, as 2.251. So Herod. i. 3τὴν Μηδείης ἁρπαγήν σφι προφέρεινHerod. iii. 120εἰπεῖν τινι προφέροντα” = to speak tauntingly. χρυσῆς is here the unanimous reading of MSS., “χρυσέης” being occasionally found in other places. Edd. generally read “χρυσέης”, but (unless we are prepared to say that the quantity of the “υ” is variable, as in later lyric poetry) there is nothing gained by the change; synizesis is just as doubtful in H. as contraction.
