Thersites is at the moment the accepted spokesman of the mob, who are indignant with Agamemnon for his treatment of Achilles; and it is by a subtle piece of psychology that they are made ashamed of themselves, and brought to hear reason by seeing their representative exhibited in an absurd and humiliating light, and their own sentiments caricatured till they dare not acknowledge them.
