The “υ_” of λῦτο appears to be due solely to the license of the first arsis; see App. D, c 1; we have “λύμην” with “υ^” in 21.80. “ἀλλύεσκεν” (Od. 2.105, 109) has “υ_” through metrical necessity. Heyne conj. “θοὴν ἐπὶ νῆα ἕκαστος” to save the “ϝ” of “ϝέκαστος” (as 19.277, 23.3). But if “αὐτὰρ Ἀχιλλεύς” (3) originally followed on 23.257, as has been reasonably suggested, the first three lines will belong to the “ἆθλα”, where a neglect of “ϝ” is less surprising.
