[107] ὡξ with opt. is used to express a wish = utinam also in 22.286, and perhaps Od. 17.243, Od. 21.201; cf. also Z 281. It is to be connected not with “ὥς” in wishes, ‘in like manner’ (e.g. 14.142, 23.91, Od. 1.47), but with the common “ὡς ὄφελον” as an exclamative, ‘how!’ Aristotle (Eth. Eud. vii. 1) tells us that Herakleitos, having founded his physical theory on “ἔρις”, blamed Homer for this wish, which, if fulfilled, would bring all things to confusion.
