[305] ἡ πληθύς looks like the later use of the article; but it may be defended as Homeric, since it expresses the antithesis to “οἱ μέν” above. Cf. 2.278 “ὣς φάσαν ἡ πληθύς”, immediately followed by “ἀνὰ δ᾽ ὁ πτολίπορθος Ὁδυσσεύς”.
