[272] βροτοὶ ἐπιχθόνιοι together form the predicate. μαχέοιτο, like “μαχέοιντο” 344, is a highly doubtful form; the stem “μαχε”(“ς”) is implied in “μαχές”(“ς”)“ομαι”, but nowhere else appears in the pres. The best emendation is Platt's “μαχέσαιτο”, would have fought (J. P. xxiii. 211); this use of the opt. to express past time (H. G. § 300 c) appears to belong properly to the aor. (A similar case is 20.171, where many MSS. give “μαχέεσθαι” for “μαχέσασθαι”.) See note on 5.311.
