[382] It is practically indifferent whether we take ἵνα as a final conjunction = in order that, or a local adverb = where; both uses are of course familiar in Il., though the latter is doubtless original. A local relative after a personal antecedent is rare in H., but the harshness is hardly felt, for “ἄνδρας” is virtually = country. Cf. Od. 3.319 “ἐκ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὅθεν κτλ”., and Od. 20.383 “ἐς Σικελοὺς πέμψωμεν, ὅθεν κέ τοι ἄξιον ἄλφοι”. See also note on 17.703. — It is a question if we should not adopt, with Bekker, the variant “ἵνα τοι τάδε περ”, that these at least may be saved. The half line recurs in Od. 13.364, where none of these questions arise.
