[789] σημαίνειν, to give the word of command, see 1.289. This is not consistent with Phoinix' claim to the same position in 9.442, but Phoinix is of course unknown to the author of this passage. εἰς ἀγαθόν περ, ‘for his own good,’ as we say. Cf. 9.102.
