[371] ὕψι βιβάντα, cf. Il. 3.22 “μακρὰ βιβάντα”. The phrase portrays the man's swaggering character, and, as the scholiast remarks, is in favour of the line which some added after 367 (see above). Possibly it means that he walked upright, not “ὑπασπίδια” in the orthodox fashion (158). τυχών is used absolutely, as often, the acc. being governed by βάλεν. This is one of the places where θώρηξ may be quite general, armament (App. B, iii. 3, e).
