[500] νεῶν ἐν ἀγῶνι, see on 15.428, where the expression is more appropriate than it is here. Perhaps it conveys a rhetorical reproach: it is more shameful that he should be despoiled just when he has stormed the enemy's stronghold. The reading “νέων”, in the gathering of young men, mentioned in the scholia, is of course unacceptable.
