[411] I.e. there are two fated ways by which I may pass through life; one (“μέν”, 412) short and glorious, the other (“δέ”, 414) long and unhonoured. We do not elsewhere find that Achilles has such a choice in his power; in 1. 352 he claims that since his life must be short it ought to be glorious as well.
