[548] 548-57. This simile is repeated almost verbatim in 17.657-66. It is very appropriate, and it is with little reason that most editors, following Zen., reject it here. There is nothing to cause offence in the immediate sequence of two similes. The point lies in the reluctant retreat, 555 “τετιηότι θυμῶι”.
