[282] ἐπιστάμενος ἄκοντι, the dat. is apparently comitative, as in our phrase ‘skilled with the javelin’; but the expression is a curious one. See H. G. § 144. Van Herwerden conj. “ἄκοντος”, the more usual constr.; e.g. Od. 21.406φόρμιγγος ἐπιστάμενος καὶ ἀοιδῆς”. σταδίηι, here close fight as opposed to the use of missiles. Cf. 7.241, and “αὐτοσταδίηι,13.325.
