The only other instance in H. is “σκεψάμενοςOd. 12.247, so that here there is no sign of the later preference of the aor. fut. and perf. over the pres. and imperf. of this verb. “σκοπεῖν” is not found in H. at all. The use of the verb with π̔οῖζον (whistling, Od. 9.315, 10.502) and δοῦπον, both expressing sound, is rather curious; ‘he watched for’ is of course the sense.
