[117] ἀδειής for “ἀδϝεής” contains two offences against metre (cf. 8.423ἀδδεές”). “ἀταρβής” and “ἀτειρής” have been suggested, but the corruption is wholly improbable. 117-9 may well be a later addition made up of reminiscences of 19.72-3 and 5.409. The repetition “δηΐου .. δηϊοτῆτος” occurs only here and 174; it is especially disagreeable in view of the fact that “δηϊοτής” regularly means the general engagement, not a single combat. See on 3.20. For γόνυ κάμπτειν ‘to take rest’ cf. also Od. 5.453. The phrase is common in tragedy.
