[533] “πρόσσοθεν, ἅπ. λεγόμενον”, apparently before him, though the sense is not easily reconciled with the form of the word, which should moreover be “πρό”（“ς”）“σωθεν”. Ar. explained ‘leading the horses by the reins and whipping them from the front ’ (hardly a likely way to make them come). Van Herwerden conj. “πρὸ ἕθεν”, with “πρό” lengthened before (“σϝ”）“έθεν” as in “ἀπὸ ἕθεν” 6.62 etc. Brandreth reads “καὶ ἵππους πρόσθεν ἐλαύνων”, van L. “πρόσθε ϝἔ”（“ο”). Bentley, Heyne, and Nauck regard the line as spurious. Zen. read “ὠκέας ἵππους”. The chariot could easily be dragged, for it can even be carried, by a single man; 10.505.
