[504] ἱερῶι κύκλωι, a semicircular seat of stone, sacred to the administration of justice. So the Phaiakian “ἀγορή” is “ῥυτοῖσιν λάεσσι κατωρυχέεσσ᾽ ἀραρυῖα” (Od. 6.267), and polished stones are used for seats in Od. 8.6. Cf. 5.499 for the application of “ἱερός” to a place quasi-sacred by its use. And in 11.807 the place of assembly and of justice is associated with the altars of the gods. Agallis (see on 483) took this to be a picture of the Areiopagos itself.
