[577] λίπ᾽: the full form is never found in H.; it is probably an old instrum. “λίπα” for “λίπεσα” (cf. “σάφα” for “σάφεσα”); ‘an adverb related to “λιπαρός”, as “κάρτα” to “καρτερός, λίγα” to “λιγυρός”, etc., meaning “richly,” “thickly”’ (Monro). The word is also used by Thuk. (“λίπα ἀλείψασθαι” i. 6Thuk., iv. 68) and Hippokrates (“ἐλαίωι χρίων λίπα”, etc.).
