[47] ἐυμμελίω, with good spear of ash, “τοῦ εὖ ποτε τῆι μελίαι χρησαμένου, πολεμικοῦ”, Schol.; a somewhat strange epithet to apply to Priam, who is not represented as a warrior in Homer (except 3.188); hence van L. writes “ἐυμμελίης” here and in the three repetitions of the line (165, 6.449, [8.552]), thus also removing the contracted gen. “-ω” for “-εω”. The epithet is also applied to the sons of Euphorbos in “Ρ” (9, 23, 59), and to Peisistratos, Od. 3.400.
