[513] οἱ δέ, the besieged. οὕ πω πείθοντο, i.e. were by no means thinking of accepting terms. ὑπεθωρ́ησσοντο, were secretly arming for ambush. This use of “ὑπο”- in composition does not seem to recur in H.; and for λόχωι we should have expected “λόχονδ᾽”. La R. writes “λόχωι δ᾽ ὑπὸ θωρήσσοντο”, were arming for the fight under (protected by) an ambush. The objection to this evidently is that they have not reached the ambush at this stage (see 520).
