[773] ἐπαΐξεσθαι, the fut. only is admissible with “μέλλω” in the sense I am about to. With aor. it means I am like to have, e.g. 13.777, 18.362, 24.46, Od. 4.377, Od. 14.133; just as with pres. inf. it means I am like to be doing; 10.326, 11.364, Od. 1.232, Od. 18.19 etc. (Platt in J. P. xxi. 39 ff.; see notes on 10.454, 17.46, 18.98). This clearly does not suit here, and MSS. so constantly confuse these aor. and fut. infinitives that they may be disregarded. The expression to dart upon the prize evidently implies that it was placed at the winning-point. The incident is copied by Virgil, Aen. v. 327 ff.
