[177] ἐπίκλησιν, nominally; elsewhere in H. always of a nickname, see 7.138, 18.487, 22.506. Devices such as this, to reconcile a traditional genealogy with political convenience or family pride, are common throughout Greece. The god may always be regarded as the later comer, and has degraded the original divine ancestor to a mortal hero.
