[471] It has been noted that this simile implies that only sheep's and goats' milk was used in Homeric, as in modern Greece, cattle being employed as beasts of draught; and further, that the milk was obtained only in the spring, the natural breeding-time of wild animals, instead of all the year round by an artificial stimulating life. ἐν was om. by Bentley because of the “ϝ” of “ϝέαρ”: so Od. 5.485 “ὥρηι χειμερίηι”.
