[150] None of these towns are mentioned in the Catalogue. Kardamyle (see Frazer Paus. iii. p. 401) still retains its name; for Pherai see on 5.543. The others were identified by Strabo and Pausanias with various towns in Messenia, but with no pretence at more than guess work. How the district comes to be at Agamemnon's disposal we are not told; it should naturally belong either to Menelaos, or, as the mention of Pylos — here evidently the Messenian — would lead us to suppose, to Nestor.
