[507] No Arne was known in Boiotia in historical times, the only known Arne being in Thessaly. Strabo takes this to be the prehistoric name of Ptoon, Pausanias of Chaironeia (Frazer v. p. 208). Zen. read “Ἄσκρην”, but Ar. objected that Hesiod 's birthplace, “χεῖμα” “κακή, θέρει ἀργαλέη”, could not be called “πολυστάφυλος”. The Thessalian Arne was the original home of the Boiotians, acc. to Thuc.i. 12.
