[553] The expression ἐπὶ πτολέμοιο γεφύρας (or “γεφύρηι”) for battle-field is strange, as the phrase is elsewhere always used when a battle is actually going on, whereas here it must mean the place where battles were accustomed to be fought. The preposition ἐπί also is unique in this connexion; elsewhere it is always “ἀνά”, which Bekker and von Christ read here, from the schol. on 9.88.
