[488] ἀμφίς is here clearly used to mean round about, not apart from, the regular Epic sense. The variant “ἐόντος” is evidently meant to meet this difficulty (dwelling apart from them). περιναιέται ἀμφὶς ἐόντες, a pleonasm like “περικτίονας ἀνθρώπους οἳ περιναιετάουσι,Od. 2.65. In Od. 11.495-503 the shade of Achilles expresses the same fears for his father's treatment by his subjects.
