[171] 171 = 19.358. “ ὑπαὶ ῥιπ̂ης ” goes with “πτῆται”, is driven by the stress of the wind. αἰθρηγενέος, born in the upper air, because the N. wind was looked upon as coming from the high tops of the Thracian mountains. So we have “βορέης αἰθρηγενέτης” in Od. 5.296, where M. and R.'s note may be compared. Others refer it to “αἶθρος”, apparently meaning cold, in Od. 14.318, and translate producing cold; but compounds with -“γενης” are regularly passive.
