[223] Why Odysseus should unceremoniously begin when Aias has signed to Phoinix it would be hard to say, were it not evident that the name of Phoinix has been awkwardly dragged in to remind us of his existence. It is useless to guess what the original form of the line may have been — possibly something like “νεῦσ᾽ Αἴας Ὀδυσῆϊ: δὲ φρεσὶν ἧισι νοήσας πλησάμενος οἴνοιο κτλ.” (so van L., nearly), thus saving the “ϝ” of “ϝοίνοιο. δείδεκτο”: 4.4.
