[417] Ar. wrote “νῆα, προεῖπε γὰρ “τὼ δὲ μιᾶς περὶ νηὸς ἔχον πόνον” . . ἀλλ᾽ οὐδὲ τὸ μέτρον ἐπιδέχεται “νῆας” γράφειν” (sc. 420). But the plur. is better: “νῆας ἐνιπρῆσαι” is Hector's constant aim (8.182, 8.235, 12.198, and often); the particular ship is merely a step on the road. In 420, on the other hand, the singular is obviously required. It must be confessed that “νῆα” looks like a conjecture of Ar.
