[125] λέξασθαι, to number themselves. ἐφέστιοι, i.e. citizens in the town, as opposed to the allies from other lands; cf. “ὅσσαι μὲν Τρώων πυρὸς ἐσχάραι10.418, with note. Τρῶες Ar., MSS. “Τρῶας”, which would mean ‘to muster the Trojans.’ After “Τρῶες” above the nom. is more natural, ‘the Trojans to muster themselves.’ For “εἴ περ .. κε” with opt. see Lange EI p. 195, H. G. § 313, M. and T. § 460; it differs only by a shade from the simple “εἰ” with opt. For the sentiment compare Virg. Aen. xii. 233vix hostem, alterni si congrediamur, habemus.
