[316] Though this line is omitted by five important MSS. and is of a familiar type of interpolation, a couple of explanatory words plus padding, it can ill be spared. The omission of Hector's name would be very strange, as he has never been mentioned since 205. εἰ καί is certainly right for the unmetrical “καὶ εἰ” of all known MSS. but one, and had already been conj. by Bentley on the analogy of 5.410.
