[506] It is not quite clear whether παῦσεν and ἀριστεύοντα go closely together, stopped from doing deeds of valour, or more loosely stopped (from battle) while doing deeds of valour. In favour of the latter is the construction “ἔπαυσας μάχεσθαι” in 442, while the former seems a natural correlative to the construction of the middle with the participle (22.502, etc.), though the act. is not elsewhere used in this way.
