[297] στείομεν for “στήομεν” with the traditional change of “η” to “ει” before “ο” (“ω”): we have “στήηι, παρστήετον”, but “περιστείωσι” 17.95 (with variant “περιστήωσι”). See H. G. p. 384, and compare the form “στέωμεν” 11.348, with note. The original form was presumably “στα?-ομεν”. πρῶτον, the first rush: Thoas contemplates a rear-guard action to cover the retreat of the main body. For κε Bentley conj. “ἑ”.
