[817] This line is used here, as 11.585, of the wounded warrior; usually it refers to the successful assailant, who is more properly said “κῆρ᾽ ἀλεείνειν”. The variant “ἂψ δ᾽” is no doubt a reminiscence of the six other places where the line recurs with the connecting particle, rather than an intimation that 813-16 were ever omitted.
