[29] The name of the ‘dog’ (Canis maior) has now been transferred to the constellation of which Sirius is the brightest star. It follows close upon Orion. Ὠρίωνος, rather “Ὠαρίωνος”, see on 18.486. “ ἐπίκλησιν ” in 18.487 means ‘as a second name.’ It may be so here if we can assume that the preceding description is in itself enough to suggest the first name Sirius.
