[478] πίφαυσκε: the long “ι” occurs only here in thesi. (Brandreth conj. “ἐπίφαυσκε”.) It is, however, often long in arsi, e.g. 502. The variation is unexplained. Aischylos, the only non-Epic author who uses the word, always has “πι^”. It will be noticed that wherever the verb occurs there is always a variant “πιφάσκειν”, often, as here, more generally supported than “πιφαύσκειν”. Heyne rejects the line as weak and superfluous.
