[466] “παρέσσεται, παρέξομαι” Zen. Aph., a more regular expression of the thought, but not therefore necessarily to be preferred. The indefinite τις here, as elsewhere, connotes the idea of ‘many’ e.g. 16.629; the origin of this sense may be seen in the ‘“τις” of public opinion,’ cf. 2.271 where “τις” = “ἡ πληθύς” of 278). The addition of πολέων seems to be a slight logical irregularity, though the intention is evidently to emphasize the “τις”; in other words, we should rather have expected “πολλοί τινες ἀνθρώπων”. But the required emphasis is given after all by the sentence as we have it, as will be felt if we translate ‘many a one of the many men there be.’
