[558] 558 is an interpolation just caught on the point of obtaining acceptance in the vulg. It is entirely ignored by the scholia and even by Eust. (though it is found in MSS. of earlier date), and is evidently due to the wish to supply an infin. to ἔασας, as in 20.312, q.v. How needless this is may be seen from 569, 684, 16.731, Od. 4.743-44, etc.; cf. also Eur. Med. 1057ἔασον αὐτούς, τάλαν, φεῖσαι τέκνων”. Eur. Itis curious that so simple a construction should have given rise to difficulties and led to conjectures earlier than the interpolation; e.g. Did. wrote “ἕασας, ἀντὶ τοῦ ἥδυνας, ηὔφρανας. ὅπερ ἀγνοήσαντές τινες” (!) “ἔγραψανἐπεί με πρῶτ᾽ ἐλέησας”.” The “τινές” include Dion. Sidon. as appears from Herodianos.
