[591] This awkward line has almost certainly been added, partly from 18.220, by some one who did not see the antithesis of “πειρώμενος” and “ἐν ἀέθλωι” above. The “αἰγανέη” is a hunting-spear not used in war and “πειρώμενος” distinctly excludes real earnest; while the constr. of ὑπό, under the stress of (cf. H. G. § 204. 3), is very harsh at such a distance from the verb. Fick rejects 590 as well, but this is needless (Schulze Q. E. p. 278); he raises a further objection against the synizesis of -“εων”, but this may represent -“ᾶν”, the regular Aiolic form; cf. note on -“εω”, 74.
