[537] Ἱστίαιαν, trisyllable by synizesis, as “Αἰγυπτίας9.382, Od. 4.83. Cf. “Ἱστιαιεύς μ᾽ ἀνέθηκεν” at the beginning of a hexameter in an inscr. from Delphi; where, however, we should naturally have supposed that the diphthong is shortened before the following vowel, as in “οἷος13.275, “γαιήοχοςHes. Theog. 15, etc.
