[260] ἔθοντες, suo more, with the wantonness of children. So of the Kalydonian boar, “κακὰ πόλλ᾽ ἔρδεσκεν ἔθων Οἰνῆος ἀλωήν,” 9.540. “ ἐριδμαίνωσιν ”, a word of doubtful formation, found only here. In sense it is evidently equivalent to “ἐρεθίζωσιν”, and shews no relation to “ἐρίζω”, to which analogy would lead us (cf. “σκυδμαίνω” by “σκύζομαι”). Hence Agar (J. P. xxv. 41) ingeniously conj. “ἐριδμαίνωσ᾽ ἐρέθοντες”, vie in provoking.
