[520] θηλύτεραι γυναῖκες: a phrase which occurs several times in the Odyssey, but not again in the Iliad. There is no trace of the word meaning anything else than female, and the redundance of the epithet seems to be a genuine instance of Epic naiïveté. The comparative form merely indicates opposition to the male sex; see H. G. § 122. Schol. A may be compared for a different and curious explanation.
