[432] ζαθέοισι, doubtless because this was the point from which the Phoenician worship of Aphrodite was, according to unanimous tradition, introduced into Greece (“ἱερὸν ἁγιώτατον καὶ ἱερῶν ὁπόσα Ἀφροδίτης παρ᾽ Ἕλλησίν ἐστιν ἀρχαιότατον”, Paus.iii. 23. 1). The only other trace of this connexion in H. is the name “Κυθέρεια” in the The Hom. Od. epithet “ζάθεος” has evident reference to the habitation of a god in the case of Killa (1.38, 452) and Krisa (2.520); but no such religious significance is known in Nisa (2.508) or Pherai (9.151, 293). These are the only places where the word occurs in H.
