[382] This line is evidently interpolated from 22.315, where Achilles is in rapid motion, so that περισσείοντο has a special force which is lost here. The addition involves a very awkward repetition of “τρυφάλεια”. It is not clear whether ἔθειραι had an initial “Ϝ” (16.795, 22.315). 383 is in both places an interpolation (see App. Crit. on 22.316) designed to bring in an allusion to the “ὁπλοποιΐα”.
