[116] που μέλλει, must, it seems, as 21.83μέλλω που ἀπεχθέσθαι Διὶ πατρί”. Bekker brackets 116-18, urging that such an appeal to Zeus as destroyer of cities contradicts what Agamemnon has just been saying. This, however, actually weakens the passage; for surely the thought that Zeus has so often ‘overthrown fenced cities’ heightens the bitterness of the “ἄτη” which Agamemnon says has come upon him. For κάρηνα used of cities compare the frequent epithet “εὐστέφανος”.
