[263] ἀνώγοι: cf. Od. 14.374εἰ μὴ .. ἐλθέμεν ὀτρύνηισιν, ὅτ᾽ ἀγγελίη ποθὲν ἔλθοι”. The opt. if right implies a slight shift of thought; Ag.puts his case generally, to include the future, but shews that he is thinking chiefly of experience in the past. But it must be admitted that we should expect Bekker's “ἀνώγηι”, and in such a matter MSS. count for little. It is not unlikely that a reminiscence of 8.189, Od. 8.70, where the opt. is necessary, may have misled rhapsodists or copyists.
